LARRY PORTER TRIO
The Larry Porter Trio plays original compositions of exceptional harmonic
beauty with an openness that allows for a maximum of interplay. These
three musicians strive to exploit the essence of the triangle where each
point is connected to the others. Whether exploring sublime ballads or
dancing through sophisticated altered blues, the trio sustains a crystalline
tension, creates an entire spectrum of atmospheres, and pushes the boundaries
of traditional jazz form.
LARRY PORTER - piano
Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1951, received his first piano lesson at age 6. He founded the group Children At Play with vibraphonist Tom van der Geld in Boston in 1971. Larry went to Germany in 1973 and played with Bobby Jones, Sal Nistico, Leszek Zadlo, Volker Kriegel, Kai Winding, Mel Lewis, Günter Lenz, and Head, Heart and Hands. In 1976 he journeyed through Asia studying music in Afghanistan and India. From 1977-80 he lived in New York, worked as a pianist in the jazz scene, as a rebab and sarod player in the Indian music scene, and accompanied storyteller Laura Simms and dancers such as Merce Cunningham. Porter returned to Germany in 1981, worked with Bobby Stern, Frank St. Peter, Airto Moreira and Thad Jones, and formed a quartet with Allan Praskin, which recorded "First Date" in Spain and stayed together 11 years. From 1986-1994 he was very active playing with Chet Baker, Art Farmer, Archie Shepp, Benny Bailey, Heinz Sauer, Leo Wright, Don Menza, Al Cohn, Monty Waters, Conexión Latina, and singers Sheila Jordan, Mark Murphy, Jay Clayton, Rachel Gould, and Jeanne Carroll, as well as recording two CDs for Enja. Back in New York in the late 90s, he recorded the highly acclaimed CD The Magical Rebab of Larry Porter. He moved to Berlin at the turn of the century where he produced many CDs of his music and performed and recorded with Mundell Lowe, Hendrik Meurkens, Barbara Mayr, Johannes Enders, Christian Grabandt, Maciej Fortuna. During his sojourn in Japan in 2003, he recorded a CD with singer, Mika Ohashi. His piece "Kind Of Jazz Suite", a work for 8 French horns commissioned by the Berlin Philharmonic, was premiered in 2005.
MARCO CHACÓN - bass
Born in Graneros, Chile in 1979, where he began his music education. At a very young age he embarked upon his professional career, playing in various rock and jazz bands. When he was 20, he moved to Barcelona. There he studied composition and arranging at the Taller de Musics. During this period, he played in many clubs and appeared at the jazz festival in Terrassa. From 2003 to 2008 he studied jazz and classical music at the Music Conservatory in Dresden. Since 2009 Marco is living and working in Berlin. He works with many bands and musicians such as Rita Chiarelli, African Aspects und the Rob Bauer Consort. He is also active as a teacher in music schools in and around Berlin.
ALEX HUBER - drums
Born in Zug, Switzerland in 1982. Discovered the drums at age 10. 2004-09 studied at the Lucerne Conservatory with Pierre Favre, Dejan Terzic and others. Alex attended masterclasses with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Dave Liebman, Jim Black, Tim Berne and went to New York several times, where he took further lessons with Ari Hoenig and John Riley. He has already played with musicians such as Frank Möbus, Johannes Fink, Max Frankl, Vera Kappeler, Dominique Girod, Colin Vallon, Patrice Moret, Fredy Studer, Fabian Gisler, Claudio Puntin, Nat Su, Samuel Blaser, Roberto Bossard, Chris Wiesendanger, Nils Wogram, Daniel Erdmann, Heiri Känzig, Hans Feigenwinter, Jean-Paul Brodbeck and Wanja Slavin. He won the recognition prize of the Ida and Albert Flersheim Foundation and the advancement award of Canton Zug. Alex currently leads his own group "Sonar Ensemble" (with Dave Gisler and Raffaele Bossard) and plays as a sideman in various bands.

Das Larry Porter Trio spielt Originalkompositionen von außergewöhnlicher harmonischer Schönheit mit einer Offenheit, die ein Maximum an Zusammenspiel erlaubt. In New York, Ende der 90er, nahm er die höchst anerkannte CD The Magical Rebab of Larry Porter auf. Seit der Jahrhundertwende lebt er in Berlin. Er nimmt viele CDs unter eigenem Namen und auch mit Mundell Lowe, Hendrik Meurkens, Barbara Mayr, Johannes Enders, Christian Grabandt, Maciej Fortuna auf. Während seines Aufenthalts in Japan, hat er eine CD mit Sängerin Mika Ohashi eingespielt. 2005 wurde sein Stück "Kind Of Jazz Suite", ein Auftragswerk der Berlin Philharmoniker für 8 Hörner, uraufgeführt.

Marco ist auch als Lehrer auf Musikschulen in Berlin und Umgebung tätig.

Er spielte bereits mit Musikern wie Frank Möbus, Johannes Fink, Max Frankl, Vera Kappeler, Dominique Girod, Colin Vallon, Patrice Moret, Fredy Studer, Fabian Gisler, Claudio Puntin, Nat Su, Samuel Blaser, Roberto Bossard, Chris Wiesendanger, Nils Wogram, Daniel Erdmann, Heiri Känzig, Hans Feigenwinter, Jean-Paul Brodbeck und Wanja Slavin. Alex ist Gewinner des Anerkennungspreises der Ida und Albert Flersheim Stiftung und Förderpreisträger des Kantons Zug. Er ist zurzeit zu hören mit seinem eigenen Trio "Sonar Ensemble" (mit Dave Gisler und Raffaele Bossard), sowie als Sideman in zahlreichen weiteren Formationen.
